Michael Hingson shares anecdotes about the personalities and sense of humor of his guide dogs, Holland and Roselle. He recounts how Holland once mischievousy led him into a mailbox and later attempted to guide him down a non-existent ramp, and how Roselle had a habit of hiding socks and slippers.
“Well, my, uh, second guide dog, Holland, that was a mischievous one? Well, he was pretty mischievous. We were walking down a sidewalk and there was a mailbox mounted up on a pole. He just went under the mailbox and, of course, the mailbox hit my hand and I jerked back and I made him do it again.”
“But Holland led me so that he walked down the stairs and he was going to send me down the ramp to this culprit thing. And somebody yelled and we stopped, but they have a sense of humor. It's all in fun, you know, you can't get mad at a dog for for doing that.”
“Roselle liked to steal socks and slippers. She didn't chew them up, she hid them. You have to go find them. Ha ha. She had that habit ever since she was a puppy and I learned that from her puppy raisers, the people who took her in their home and raised her and taught her basic skills and so on.”
