McKeel Hagerty recounted purchasing a 1967 Porsche 911 S for $500 at the age of thirteen, which he then restored with his father. This experience, involving mowing lawns and selling apples to fund parts, was a formative entrepreneurial endeavor and his first significant car deal.
“You spent five hundred bucks buying a nineteen sixty seven portion nine to eleven s when you were thirteen. Yes, like I wouldn't be allowed to buy a car at thirteen. I was lucky I had a bike and then you and your father rebuild this.”
“That's right. I will also know it was the only really good car deal I've ever done in my life. So just for what it's worth was.”
“Yeah, it was. You know, my dad was a do it yourself for hobbyist restorer guy in the garage, and both my sisters also restored cars. They were older than I was with him, and then I was the third along and we convinced this older gentleman in our town to sell us this nine to eleven s for five hundred bucks. And I had to mow an awful lot more lawns and to sell a lot more apples out of my orchard to buy the parts to restore the car.”
