Macro Musings with David Beckworth · Monday, September 28, 2026
Governor Erik Thedin shared details about his career trajectory, starting at the Riksbank's dealing room in 1989 and progressing through various roles including deputy head of the debt office, a hedge fund macro strategist, head of the Stockholm Stock Exchange, and state secretary to the minister of finance. He returned to the Riksbank as governor three and a half years ago, seeing it as a full circle in his career.
“Well, as governor, I'm basically closing the circle because my first job after university, the Stockholm School of Economics was actually in the dealing room of the Riksbank back in 1989.”
“So I actually practically was working with the kind of of liquidity system and, you know, the interest rate setting. I spent a couple of years there and then, I was part of hiking it to 17.5%, I think.”
“And then since three and a half years back in time, I'm the governor of the Riksbank. So I'm basically again closing circle with this was my first kind of job and I don't know if this is the last, but probably one of the last jobs anyway.”
