During a hike near Saint-Brieuc, Jennifer Gruenke witnessed a unique mussel harvesting operation using wheeled boats on the Bay of Saint-Brieuc. These vessels, equipped with a claw device, collect mussels from poles seeded with baby mussels.
“The vehicles were going to harvest the moules. Ah. So they're like boats with wheels, because you need the wheels to, like, get you out to where the water starts when the tide is out.”
“The poles are seeded with baby moules, and then they wait, like, a year, year and a half, and they come harvest them, and this claw just, like, scrapes them all off and puts them into the boat.”
“The place, the first place with the moules was called La Cabane de Mytilus. Mytilus is the Latin name of the moules. Oh, nice.”
