Maxwell: Americans Naive About Energy Infrastructure Costs, Blaming Technology

Jonathan Maxwell suggests Americans are naive about energy infrastructure costs, particularly at the gas pump, and are mistakenly blaming technology for price increases. He clarifies that data centers, while energy-intensive, do not run on liquid fuels and that the real opportunity lies in energy efficiency and decentralized generation.

“Well, the number one thing that's hitting people on energy infrastructure at the moment is at the pump. So gas up 27%. Diesel. You know, liquid fuels are up about 50%. A lot of that's imported from geopolitical problems, which I wrote about in The Edge. I think it's being conflated. So if you want about confused, you know, I think what's driving the American and I've got to say UK GDP right now is technology. technology is being blamed for these cost increases. You don't run data centers on liquid fuels. You run them on electricity.”

“So I think there's a big and short story. I'm here for Climate Week. There was an event pulled. I don't know if you saw this on Sunday. That was a WACA data center. It was actually sort of removed from the agenda for You know, for Climate Week. But, you know, this is such an interesting week. You know, the kind of the banner on top of the door this week is Climate Week. The conversation is about energy and actually outside of the door, there's a queue and it's about power. But, you know, there's this huge negative polling, 80 percent. negative on data centers. It's as if these two things are in conflict with each other, whereas what's actually going on in my view is you've got one of the most important opportunities for efficiency and productivity that we've ever seen. If we get this right, and I think that's the big confusion, if we get this right and we make the energy close to where it's needed, we get the heat out of data centers, because that's what you put in, megawatts in, heat comes out. This is an incredible opportunity for my thesis of age infrastructure efficiency and decentralized generation of energy.”
