Michael Froman acknowledges China's belief in its ascendant historical trajectory but stresses that China faces substantial challenges, including demographics and an economic model that appears to be losing steam. He suggests that China cannot rely solely on exports for continued growth at its current scale.
“Certainly, China believes that there is a historical trajectory where they're on the rise and the U.S. is in decline. I think the reality is, and you know this well because you follow it so closely, China has more than its share of challenges. From the demographics to the economic model, which seems to be running out of steam. You can only export your way to growth for so long at the size that they are.”
