Urban planner Jeff Speck observes a significant revolution in European city planning, prioritizing pedestrian-friendliness over cars, which has increased the quality of life in these cities. He notes that many European cities, which previously had many parking lots in their central squares, have transformed these spaces into transit hubs, parks, and green areas.
“Americans might go to a European city for art, or the history, or the food, but chances are, they'll come away impressed by Europe's pedestrian-friendly urban cores, efficient mass transit, and inviting public squares.”
“And when they return home, they might wonder why we don't have cities like that here, that are more pedestrian friendly.”
“There has been a huge revolution going on there in city planning, and I’ve got to say, it's bad news for those who insist on driving their cars, isn't it?”
