Lindsay Newman of Chatham House suggested that the recent U.S.-China summit focused more on optics and maintaining a 'constructive relationship' than on substantive policy changes. She noted that the objective seemed to be keeping both sides 'coloring within the lines' of a strategic dialogue.
“The objective was to keep everybody coloring within the lines of have this top of mind framing of a strategic relationship and to really have these optics.”
“The market, the consensus is right here. This was about pomp and circumstance, about optics, less so than moving the dial forward on any of the real substance. But in that sense, it's mission accomplished.”
