High diesel prices are directly impacting headline CPI and are expected to lead to a more than 5% increase in gasoline prices in September, adding to the CPI figures. Economist Anna Wang explained that this surge creates an economic feedback loop, restraining activity by increasing costs for farmers and freight companies, which will likely lead to higher prices for groceries and appliances.
“Diesel hits all-time high. Today, $6 per gallon.”
“all that, that matters. Number one, diesel is hitting the headline CPI. And likely, uh, in September, uh, we are 11 days into September. That is going to translate to more than 5% increase in gasoline prices, which will add, uh, roughly, uh, 0.2 percentage points on headline CPI.”
“So we are going to see some pass through and higher pressure on some grocery prices and also on, uh, some heavy bulk appliance goods.”
