The effectiveness of Canada's retaliatory tariffs against US imports is questioned, with arguments that it harms Canadian consumers and businesses without aiding negotiations. Historical examples suggest such tactics do not work, and Canada previously removed tariffs for this reason.

“To create some sort of environment for a trade deal. I think it does the opposite. What it does is cost Canadian consumers and businesses. US tariffs cost US consumers and businesses.”
“I mean, there's just no case to be made economically that they worked, and they haven't in practice. And we just have to look back a year. So, no, I think it was a bad move.”
