Following unfulfilled promises of reform after World War II, the Front de Libération Nationale (FLN) initiated the Algerian War of Independence in 1954. The conflict, marked by severe war crimes on both sides, led to negotiations culminating in the Evian Accords signed on March 18th, 1962, which established a ceasefire and a process for transferring sovereignty.
