Organizational psychologist Tim Mannick explains the psychological concept of projection, where individuals tend to see their own traits or issues in others, particularly those who aggravate them. He notes that strong emotional responses to people or events often indicate something mirroring back within oneself, making money a particularly potent mirror due to its emotional charge.
“And the basic idea of projection is often, if I see in the world something or someone that seems to aggravate me, trigger me, activate me, you know, I get all hot and bothered. Then very often that is mirroring back something in me.”
“So, to answer your question, on one level everything does. You know, that's what the Hindus and the Buddhists and people say, the whole world is a reflection of your mind. Okay, but that's hard to work with.”
“But the taboo is, people like to pretend that it's this totally rational thing. So, economists have a rational theory of money. And budgets people, it's all about spreadsheets. So, it's like we're all pretending that money is this just rational, analytical numbers based thing. But there's all of this squishy, difficult, awkward, embarrassing emotion going on. And that's why money is such a great tool.”
