Financial planner Shabbar Kassam and organizational psychologist Tim Mannick discuss their podcast, "The Problem of Money," exploring how financial issues often stem from deeper psychological patterns rather than the money itself. They emphasize that problems can arise regardless of wealth level, with money acting as a mirror for our internal states.
“And all our problems can be different, but kind of similar. And by the way, and you'll know this Pete, and you know Shabaka is a financial advisor. And I'm a coach. And people can have big problems with money, whether they've got loads of it, average or not very much.”
“So, what's going on? It seems, in the terminology of what we explore, money does something to our psychology. And money gets wrapped up with some of our least conscious and least developed parts. And therefore, when we have a problem with money, it's not money's problem, it's reflecting back some part of us that maybe we need to be more in touch with or more conscious of.”
“But we very rarely talk about my money. Like, what's going on to me and my money? That becomes deeply personal and very uncomfortable. And I think that, uh, what I've managed to get comfortable with is talking about my money. And that allows the conversation to really flourish.”
