Longevity and wellness expert Linda Gratton, along with economist Andrew Scott, advocate for planning as if individuals will live to 100 or beyond. This perspective significantly alters traditional retirement planning, suggesting longer working lives are necessary.
“Well, there's a very strong possibility, Joe. And I think that we all need to bear that in mind. We all need to imagine that we're going to live to a hundred. And then, of course, we may not. But for me, that's what I'm teaching my executives, my MBA students, imagine you live to a hundred because the probability is that you might.”
“Either you save a lot, 20% from the moment that you start working, which I'm sure all of your listeners are doing, Joe. Or you're prepared to retire at 60 on a low income from those 40 years. Or you work longer. And Andrew and I, as an economist, as a psychologist, said, actually, you need to think about working longer. We said into your 70s. I think it might even be pushing into our 80s now.”
