The isolation of elemental fluorine was a significant challenge due to its extreme reactivity, with early experimenters like Carl Wilhelm Scheele producing hydrofluoric acid but failing to isolate the element itself. In 1886, French chemist Henri Moissan finally succeeded by using a specialized electrochemical process involving potassium hydrogen fluoride and anhydrous hydrogen fluoride, a feat for which he later received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
“The problem was that whatever apparatus researchers used tended to be attacked by the very substance they were trying to produce.”
“The breakthrough finally came from the French chemist Henri Moissan.”
“On June 22nd, 1886, Moissan successfully produced and identified elemental fluorine gas.”
