Amy Webb emphasizes that AI technology in itself is not inherently dangerous, likening it to a fork which is useful but can be misused. She argues that the current focus on 'doomsaying and hand-wringing' is counterproductive and prevents positive applications of AI, such as in medicine or climate change mitigation.
“I think we all need to remember that technology on its own is not dangerous. Right? If you think of a fork, a fork is something we use every day. Life is better because we have forks. We can eat more easily. A fork becomes dangerous if you pick it up and stab somebody in the neck.”
“So this is a glib way of saying that AI on its own is not a danger. There's lots that can be done with it. There's a world full of life-saving medicines, ways to mitigate climate change, there's a lot of positive that can be done.”
“But we have got to get out of this endless horrific loop of doomsaying and hand-wringing because talk about a recursive loop that's making everything worse. We're we're in it. That's what is happening right now instead of self-improving, we are all getting worse.”
