Mark Newton, Head of Technical Strategy at Fundstrat, anticipates market volatility leading up to the midterm elections due to factors like tech consolidation, rising oil prices, and increasing interest rates. Despite strong earnings and a solid economy, he expects a choppy environment for the US stock market. However, Newton remains optimistic about a positive market close for the year.
“I think we're entering a time when specifically in September, we're likely going to get some volatility and, uh, we can speak about that in more detail.”
“It shouldn't be a straight shot, continued push higher in the next few months. And the reasons for that, uh, really have to do with the fact that tech still has some work to do before it can really, uh, regain some of the former momentum that it had.”
“I do see that by end of year, market should end the year on a positive note. I just don't think it's going to be an easy, uh, two or three months.”
