Joe Mazumdar notes that discussions about Barrick and Newmont joining forces in Nevada have been ongoing for years, dating back to his time at Newmont. The recent agreement was partly influenced by Newmont's efforts to acquire Goldcorp and Barrick's opposition to that deal.
“Okay, so if we go back, like when I worked for Newmont, there was always this, you know, hey, does Barrick and Newmont get together?”
“Part of that joint venture happened because Newmont was trying to acquire Goldcorp.”
“Barrick was also trying to get in the mix and say this was not a good deal, uh, and trying to talk to their own shareholders and say, you know, uh, you guys shouldn't vote for this.”
