Albert Namatjira's recognition as a citizen, and in some interpretations, an 'honorary white person,' created a clash with his community. He was expected to distance himself from his Indigenous kin, but as one of the few with an income, he felt obliged to share his resources as per cultural norms.
“But what came from being made a citizen, being made an honorary white person, was that then he was expected to discard his relationships and responsibilities with his own community. And to act differently to them, and differently to the rest of his family. And that immediately caused a clash.”
“Because he had cultural responsibilities that, you know, he had to look after members of his family, he was one of the few people making an income. And so he was obliged to share that with his community. That's just part and parcel of what we do. If you've got something, you share it with others.”
