Jeff Christian suggests that in times of distress, both gold and the US dollar are acting as safe-haven assets, with investors choosing to lean on one or both depending on the circumstances. While he sees gold as a primary safe haven, he describes the dollar as the 'best of the worst' in terms of sovereign debt creditworthiness.
“The flight to safety asset, the de facto flight to safety asset, which is it right now?”
“It's gold and the dollar.”
“And I think the present time is one of them where they say, it's gold and the dollar.”
“With the dollar, I don't necessarily think that there's a tremendous amount of confidence that it's a long-term safe haven.”
“But what it is is the best of the worst, in terms of sovereign debt.”
