Amazon Web Services (AWS) will be shutting down its Mechanical Turk (MTurk) platform on September 30th, 2026, after over 20 years of operation. Launched in 2005, MTurk provided a marketplace for human intelligence tasks, connecting workers with digital jobs such as data labeling and transcription. AWS stated the decision to close was based on regular evaluations of its programs and services.
“AWS says that after more than 20 years, it plans to shut down Mechanical Turk on September 30th.”
“We regularly evaluate our programs, tools and services and make adjustments based on those assessments, an AWS notice posted to the Mechanical Turk or MTurk website said.”
“Following an assessment, we've made the decision to close AWS Mechanical Turk effective September 30th, 2026.”
