Google is investing over $15 billion in AI infrastructure in Finland, leveraging the country's cold climate and energy access. While Finland is raising taxes on data centers, it maintains a stable environment attracting major tech companies, a contrast to the US where data centers face political pushback and energy capacity challenges.
“It is not just the southern hemisphere that is attracting interest. I guess Google announced that it will invest more than $15 billion in AI infrastructure in Finland, also a cold place with access to energy.”
“Yeah, and Finland is another interesting example because they're creating a friendly environment for data centers. You know, you wouldn't think that at face value. They are actually raising taxes on data centers, but they are also clearly still attracting Google and large companies because of that long-term stability.”
“The US isn't, you know, a great alternative right now. And, um, you know, Google has also been, they're incentivizing companies to meet their goals around energy efficiency. If data centers want to gain these incentives, they also have to exceed data efficiency or energy efficiency requirements.”
