For centuries, the Srivijaya Empire was largely forgotten due to its perishable building materials and the difficulty of preserving records in its geography. The empire's existence was pieced together from fragmented foreign accounts until French linguist George Sedes, working with the Ligore Stone, realized that various historical references pointed to the same powerful trading confederacy.
