Nate Sory supports the proposal by Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Greg Casar to pause advanced AI development until safety rules are established, calling it a sensible response to AIs exhibiting concerning behaviors. However, he argues that a global, international diplomatic approach is necessary, as a domestic pause would not prevent other nations from continuing AI advancement.
“I think it's an appropriate response for sure. Again, when the AIs are like breaking out of their containers, joining up, calling themselves a swarm and breaking out onto the internet that they weren't supposed to have access to, to commit crimes.”
“In terms of whether it goes far enough, I think the main place that this falls down is that the global response to AI has to be global. This can't just be a domestic thing.”
“So we need international diplomacy here, and we need globally to back off from making these machines that would be able to replace us. But, you know, a domestic pause is a great place to start.”
