Andy Baraghani discusses his trip to Beirut and meeting Kamal Mouzawak, founder of 'Souk el Tayeb,' a farmer's market aimed at cataloging Lebanese agricultural and food culture. Baraghani notes the market's location on the former Green Line as a symbol of reconciliation, bringing together women from diverse religious communities.
“We have a mutual friend called Kamal Muswag who started a thing called Sukoltaire, which is a farmer's market and a way to kind of catalog agriculture and food culture throughout Lebanon and really related to bringing people from all of the major sext So she eyed Sunny Drew's Maronite Christian all coming women are women and women. Yeah, well exactly, and that's evolved from that too. And it's amazing because it's it's on the green line where you know that kind of demilitariz zone.”
“The absolutely, I mean, I think it was very accidental. I have to mention I wanted to go to Lebanon and I wanted to go to Bay Route. I had this kind of sometimes it's these you know, things you read or see or an old photo and it inspires me and it's like, oh, I just want to go there.”
“And then they would catalog them. So it became this kind of living archive of Lebanese cuisine. And I only stumbled on it. It's like a canteen but really beautiful, and then have all of the salads kind of brought out to you.”
