Canada has historically aligned its trade policies with the US, particularly concerning China and electric vehicle imports, due to integrated supply chains. This alignment has included past agreements limiting trade with non-market economies, a practice seen as reasonable by some.
“First is that point you just made, that if we think back not too long ago, just a couple of years back, when we did, for example, levy considerable barriers to the import of electric vehicles, for example, from China. This was largely in alignment with moves made by the United States.”
“And for Canada, because of our supply chains being so tightly integrated with the United States, there is sometimes an interest, even just a Canadian self-interest to have trade policies that are aligned with the US.”
“It's not new. You know, as recently as 2017, the US and Mexico agreed to a new trade agreement. Canada was not initially part of that, but that agreement included provisions that would limit Canada and Mexico from, uh, signing agreements with China.”
