A significant condition of Meta's $18 billion settlement is that the full payout is contingent on TikTok and YouTube agreeing to implement similar default daily time limits and pay substantial fines. Meta has publicly urged its competitors to join in these changes, stating that teens may simply move to other platforms if restrictions are not industry-wide.
“But they won't pay out the full $18 billion unless TikTok and YouTube agree to a default daily one hour time limit and pay $5.3 billion to these states.”
“In an open letter published yesterday, Meta called on TikTok and YouTube to join them and making changes to their products, saying, quote, we know that when teens are restricted on one app, they simply move to another.”
