AI scientist Gary Marcus expressed skepticism regarding claims that OpenAI's new model, Astra, represents Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). He described the situation as an 'AGI bait and switch,' arguing that the definition of AGI has been consistently lowered and that current models do not live up to historical predictions.
“Well, AGI has supposedly arrived, but capitalism and wages remain intact, which would imply one of two things. Either the industry's predictions about AGI were wildly wrong, or this isn't really AGI.”
“So every time we see this phenomenon, the same phenomenon, a model comes out, everybody's super excited about it. And then after a few days, people are like, 'Yeah, but I tried it and it doesn't really work on this, it doesn't really work on that.'”
“The thing is that there's what I would call the AGI bait and switch, right?”
