A US District Court judge has ruled that the Pentagon's designation of Anthropic as a supply chain risk was illegal and baseless. The ruling, which largely sided with Anthropic in its lawsuit against the Trump administration, stated the government erred in its haste and lacked evidence of Anthropic being a national security risk, suggesting the action was retaliatory for the company's criticism of the Pentagon's AI use. The judge directed the government to rescind all guidance related to the blacklisting.
“US District Judge Rita F. Lynn of the Northern District of California, mostly siding with Anthropic and her ruling on the company's March lawsuit against the Trump administration, saying the government had erred in its haste to give Anthropic that designation.”
“The government didn't provide evidence that the company was an actual national security risk, Lynn wrote in her decision, but rather acted in unlawful retaliation to Anthropic's pushback against the Pentagon's use of AI.”
“We welcome the court's ruling that this supply chain risk designation was unlawful, an Anthropic spokeswoman said.”
