Queen Elizabeth allowed Walter Raleigh to join the English Armada but insisted his rival, the Earl of Essex, remain at court. Essex, however, defied the order and joined the fleet, only for Raleigh to be recalled by the Queen due to the expedition's impending failure.
“Elizabeth had allowed Raleigh to be a part of this expedition, but at the same time, she insisted that Essex remain at court.”
“But let's remember, Essex was an impetuous young man, and when he found out that he was staying and Raleigh was heading off to glory and fortune, he stormed off.”
“He made his way to the fleet, got on a ship, and sailed off, determined to be a hero. Elizabeth was furious, and while she couldn't get Essex back, she was able to recall her other favorite, Raleigh.”
