The Watergate scandal, which began with a 1972 burglary, escalated due to President Nixon's administration's extensive efforts to conceal illegal activities, including wiretapping government officials and journalists, and obstructing FBI investigations. Despite Nixon's public denials, recorded conversations and confessions from those involved eventually led to impeachment proceedings and his resignation.
