Rob Lea notes the distinct challenges of swimming the English Channel and climbing Mount Everest, comparing the former's strict rules and the latter's "low grade suffering." He initially investigated if anyone had completed both, discovering nine people had done so, leading to his "Peak and Pond" challenge.
“So, I got home and I started researching the English Channel, realized there's a quite a debate online, what's harder, the English Channel or climbing Everest.”
“And people who, you know, think of the English Channel as harder, it really strips you down because there's a lot of rules in open water swimming. You can't wear a wetsuit, you can't touch the boat. Uh, there's just rules around pretty much everything and how they observe it and how you ratify a swim.”
“Everest is a different kind of, uh, hard, right? It's like low grade suffering we call it, you're up on the mountain for a month or more at a time, and you're just feeling like crap and your body is, like, slowly dying.”
