Major US tech companies, including Meta and Nvidia, are advocating for an open AI ecosystem rather than restrictions, even as Chinese competitors gain ground. This stance is partly driven by a desire to maintain competitive advantage and to avoid pricing pressure from cheaper Chinese open-weight models.
“Might that have a role to play in why someone like, you know, Musk at Meta would be very excited about rolling back restrictions on Chinese companies, because essentially, it means that you kind of slow the role of, you know, Sam Altman and Anthropic, is that the the teams that are emerging in AI right now?”
“I think it's really, uh, you know, a lot of companies want to maintain their competitive advantage. And so, you know, for a company like Anthropic, which is exclusively building these proprietary closed source models, that having strong competitive open source models is not really where you want to be in terms of, you know, you already have razor thin expectations in terms of the data center build out, um, you're investing a ton in compute, and if you have your profit potential likely under cut by the fact that they have to face competition, uh, from these smaller Chinese companies, then you definitely don't want that.”
