In late summer 1862, Robert E. Lee led the Army of Northern Virginia into Maryland, aiming to achieve a decisive victory on Northern soil and potentially gain foreign recognition. The invasion was ultimately stopped at the Battle of Antietam, forcing Lee to retreat back into Virginia.
