When asked about robots being equipped to fix leaks while performing inspections, Dr. Peter Funkhauser clarified that while demonstrations exist, reliable automated repair in hazardous environments is still under development. He noted the current focus is on inspection and data collection, with the ultimate goal of having robots with multi-arm manipulation for repairs, but emphasized the significant work and AI advancements needed to achieve 99.99% reliability in complex, uncontrolled settings.
“When do you put some equipment on these to fix the goddamn leak while you're out there? Is that not the holy grail? Is it not?”
“Well, not today. I mean, in a demo, yes. But in reality, getting it to 99.99% reliability in explosive atmosphere. That's still in development. First step is close to levers, open cabinets.”
“Eventually, you want to have by manual manipulation, maybe three, four arms. To fix the machine, right? That's still, you know, AI will help us. There's still a lot of work ahead of us.”
