Regarding existing 401(k) plans, Chris Casey urges individuals to review their plans and consult with administrators about options like partial rollovers into an IRA or contributing to a Roth component. He believes many people overlook these possibilities and stick with limited, often suboptimal, investment choices.
“But I would say everyone should look at the plan and talk to their administrator. Can they do a partial rollover into an IRA and thus avail themselves of more options?”
“Is there a Roth component? That they don't know about, that they should at least put money into a Roth.”
“So, that's one thing a lot of people, I think, one of the biggest mistakes people do for 401k is existing plans or new plans, is not really ask some of those questions with the administrator and just kind of blindly think your only choices are the, you know, the dozen options they put in front of you, which often times aren't very good.”
