Peter Carlin explains that beyond the issues in the Persian Gulf, Europe is facing significant logistical problems with its inland waterways. Low Rhine River levels are restricting barge traffic, with authorities limiting cargoes to 20% capacity, making it difficult to transport essential fuels like diesel and jet fuel despite potential availability.
“So, we, uh, also have those problems coming down into the European zone more directly because not only is diesel and jet fuel not arriving out of the Gulf, even when small parcels do arrive or there's shipping coming out of Holland from refining systems there, we now have Rhine levels that are so low that the barges and cargoes cannot actually make it down the Rhine.”
“The Rhine authorities have told all your energy shippers, your cargoes must be only 20% loaded max, or you cannot come down.”
“Literally, you can walk across the Rhine almost. It's becoming a puddle.”
