After her breakup with Rodin and the end of patronage from a Countess, Camille Claudel faced severe financial difficulties and increasing isolation. Her family, particularly her mother, refused to support her, contributing to her mental and emotional decline. In 1913, her mother and brother had her committed to an asylum, where she remained for 30 years.
“And her family refuses to give her money. And even though her father is still alive, her mother clearly dominates because her mother refuses to help her, completely.”
“So she destroyed everything. She said that it was her enemies that were really causing all of her problems. She thought that there was this group of people with Rodin, who was, of course, her obsession, who were out to get her, and she had absolutely no food.”
“And so her mother and her brother sign her into an asylum, and she's taken away by force.”
