Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has formally stated that the company has never advocated for a ban on open-weight models, despite recent accusations. Amodei emphasized that while open weights are a public good, they present higher risks for cyberattacks and biological weapons compared to proprietary models due to difficulties in monitoring use.
“Anyone who has read my past writings should know that I don't regard such bans as a useful measure. But let me state it clearly so there is no doubt. Anthropic has never advocated for a ban on open weight models.”
“Banning the use of these models by US businesses does nothing to address the risks, because bad actors are unlikely to be legitimate US businesses.”
“A blanket ban on open weight models is not the correct remedy or something we have called for.”
