Dino Mavroudis explained how Saronic's 'Marauder' autonomous ships could revolutionize US naval capabilities by providing more firepower at a fraction of the cost of traditional destroyers. He stated they plan to build 20 Marauders per year, potentially fielding more Vertical Launch System (VLS) tubes than destroyers at a much lower price point.
“A destroyer, naval destroyer costs about $3 billion. Takes six to eight years to make. You can field about 96 VLS tubes.”
“Marauder, I won't give you the exact price or cost, but it can reduce that cost by a significant amount. But we're building 20 Marauders for, we're going to be building 20 Marauders per year at our shipyard in Louisiana.”
“So now you can field, we can field the equivalent of 16 VLS tubes on the back of that 100 and 80-foot fully autonomous ship. So now you can field 320 VLS tubes per year as opposed to 15, and you could do it at a fraction of the cost.”
