Demis Hassabis's departure from Google DeepMind's CEO role highlights a divergence in AI strategy, particularly between Large Language Models (LLMs) and world models. While much of the industry, including OpenAI, focuses on LLMs, Hassabis has emphasized the need for breakthroughs beyond current LLM technology, citing his interest in areas like AlphaFold and artificial cells. This difference in perspective may have led to frustration among senior executives at Google who were reportedly concerned about Hassabis's focus on commercial demands.
“The companies, uh, companies that have been able to build strong LM's have been able to make a lot of money off of it and if you didn't think that progress was going to continue at a pace, uh, and you think that there are other research areas that are more promising, uh, it would almost be tough to continue to go along even if it made sense for your business interests if you thought the research, you know, more promising research, uh, is going to be elsewhere.”
“So basically Demis is like thinking his goal is to develop, um, super powerful AI and he seems potential in areas outside of LLMs, where while the whole technology industry is moving towards, uh, large language models with the GPT model and Claude.”
“In fact, when I spoke with Demis in January of last year, one of the things he told me is he wanted to make an artificial cell. You just don't do that with a large language model, you do that with other types of of AI models.”
“So I actually think it's good for AI, uh, that Demis will be focusing more on the scientific side, probably more on the world model side and not deeply in LLMs.”
