The Korean KOSPI index experienced its largest monthly drop in history, falling 33% in July. This downturn is worse than previous financial crises and has led to approximately 1.2 million accounts facing margin calls, impacting about 3% of the population. Despite a recent 18% rebound, the index is down another 5% today.
“Uh, that all changed last month when the index was down 33% in July alone, which was the biggest drop in the country's history, worse than the 1998 Asian financial crisis, worse than 2008 and worse than the tech bubble burst.”
“Um, and I think something like 1.2 million accounts got margin called, which is roughly 3% of the population, just, uh, over the weekend, uh, or actually over last week, uh, the index, uh, rebounded about 18%, but just today it's down another 5%.”
