In 1942, Charles de Gaulle dispatched Jean Moulin to unify the disparate French resistance fighters into a single entity known as the Force Française Combattante. Despite facing distrust and the presence of German spies, Moulin's efforts, along with worsening Vichy repression, eventually led to greater unity and solidified de Gaulle's leadership by 1943.
