In an effort to quell the growing resistance, the Vichy regime implemented harsh collective punishments, including the estimated shooting of 30,000 civilians to deter involvement with resistance efforts. A notable instance of this brutal policy was the Oradour-sur-Glane massacre, where German troops killed 642 civilians and destroyed the entire village.
