Following the Great Trek, the Afrikaners established independent Boer Republics. In 1838, they clashed with the Zulu Kingdom at the Battle of Blood River, a victory that became a cornerstone of Afrikaner nationalism. The British initially acknowledged Boer independence but later sought to regain control, leading to further conflict, including the Second Boer War.
