Danielle DiMartino Booth expressed concern over a lack of capital expenditure (CapEx) investment in the economy, despite significant government spending and AI-driven CapEx. She noted that companies are prioritizing inventory rebuilding over long-term investment.
“What we have not seen, which is disturbing, is investment in capital. In CapEx. In fact, companies have been pushing off that CapEx that the one big beautiful bill opened the door to because they're spending money just keeping the lights on and making sure that they have enough in stock to continue manufacturing. That's problematic outside of AI.”
“And in fact, companies are spending money and we've seen stock piles rebuilt and we've seen extra stock piles rebuilt. But we haven't seen the capital expenditures come out in the survey data. And that's problematic because one big beautiful bill was supposed to produce that outside of AI.”
