James Sexton explained that love and marriage are distinct types of relationships, and a positive correlation between the two is not always guaranteed. Drawing from his own divorce, he learned that even amicable separations are painful and represent a difficult transition. He noted that love is a feeling but also a verb, and how one loves may not align with how the other person needs to be loved.
“You know, like there's love and marriage, you know, are two very different kinds of relationships, necessarily. And I don't know that there's always a positive correlation between the two.”
“But it still was painful. It still was hard. It's still a transition, you know, change is good, but transitions are hard. And it was a hard transition.”
“And that the way that you love someone, it may not be the way they need to be loved.”
