Host Adam Taggart and Stephanie Pamboy discuss the economic lens through which to view birthright citizenship. Pamboy notes that while immigration is needed due to demographic issues, the current system allows for exploitation, citing 'birth tourism' as an example.
“And so, you know, I'm just curious, you know, I get people are just saying, well, look, it's it's the law of the land, sorry you don't like it, it's in the Constitution, you don't like it, change the Constitution. And maybe that's what we should do. But it's so interesting to me that we've gotten to a point where there's something in the Constitution or at least in our law where I think a lot of people can look at it and say, I don't think that serves our interests.”
“And so we do need real immigration. However, the system as it stands now, I think clearly needs to be reformed and, um, you know, I'm not a constitutional scholar so I don't hold forth on it, but it does seem like, maybe it's time to address exactly this notion of birthright citizenship and, um, you know, put some kind of guardrails against this kind of naked exploitation of our Constitution to just basically, you know, have people with malintents or who just plan to live off the system, um, from coming here and taking advantage of that.”
