The US government is reportedly considering actions against Chinese AI models due to concerns about censorship, potential data misuse for espionage or model development, and the long-term risk of dependency. However, the open-weight nature of many Chinese models mitigates some of these issues by allowing local deployment and customization.
“I think there's at least three concerns. One is that the Chinese models censor. Um, there's a concern about data and access to data and, you know, can the Chinese use this for, uh, developing their own models or espionage, and others. And then third, there's a longer-term concern about dependence. And, right, would the Chinese cut you off and, and, and coercion?”
“Now, open weight models limit a lot of these concerns, right? Because once you download them on your own systems, you can train them to answer as honestly, uh, as you want. And also with open weight, you're not constantly in contact with another server. And so the data issue is much less pressing there.”
