Unlike sectors like electric vehicles or solar power, Chinese AI companies do not appear to be heavily reliant on government subsidies. While some support may exist for chip acquisition due to US restrictions, state support for AI has not reached the levels seen for companies like Huawei.
“No, we don't really see a lot of subsidies. There's probably some support on the chip side. Um, since we know getting access to the, uh, most powerful chips is difficult for China because they've been cut off from the US. There's been some suggestion that there's been some subsidies there. But it's not what we saw, for example, around Huawei, the telecommunications company, or some of the others where we saw some significant state support.”
